Police in Auraiya have detained two adults and a juvenile for allegedly impersonating officers from the Cyber Crime Branch, Lucknow, in a widespread blackmailing scheme involving obscene video threats. This cruel extortion racket tragically resulted in the death by suicide of a young man.
Speaking to the media at Sadar police station, Superintendent of Police (SP) Abhishek Bharti confirmed the details. The victim, Anuraj, a resident of Khanpur Road, took his own life on November 18. He had been under intense pressure for several days due to repeated threatening calls from the accused and ultimately hanged himself inside his home.
The victim’s family filed a complaint stating that unknown individuals contacted Anuraj, falsely claiming a case had been registered against him for viewing obscene content and that police were arriving to arrest him. The callers allegedly demanded money to “settle the matter”, warning him of social humiliation if he failed to pay.
The SP identified the two arrested adults as Narendra Singh, son of Kishanpal, and Lalsingh, son of Natthu. All three accused, including the juvenile, are residents of Kanpur, Dehat. During police questioning, they admitted to targeting random people across various states and districts, successfully extorting money by instilling fear of arrest and public disgrace. The criminal group was found to be using 23 SIM cards and three mobile phones for their fraudulent activities.
Authorities have noted that approximately 10 similar complaints related to this group’s activities are already registered on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
SP Bharti issued a strong advisory to the public: “If any caller claims to be police or court staff and demands money, do not panic—contact the nearest police station or dial Cyber Helpline 1930.”
