At the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni met to reaffirm and expand cooperation between the two countries across various sectors, including technology, artificial intelligence (AI), space, defence, and security. The discussions underscored a shared commitment to innovation-driven collaboration and the development of stronger bilateral governance frameworks.
A central highlight of the meeting was the launch of the India-Italy Joint Initiative to Counter Financing of Terrorism, signalling an elevated focus on financial and security governance. This initiative aims to strengthen regulatory coordination and enhance mechanisms to prevent the misuse of financial systems for illicit purposes.
The leaders also explored avenues for collaboration in emerging technologies, with AI and space taking centre stage. Italy expressed support for India’s upcoming AI Summit in 2026, creating potential for joint research, cross-border technology policy alignment, and co-innovation opportunities. Both sides emphasised the importance of building frameworks for ethical AI, cybersecurity, and responsible technological deployment.
Trade and investment formed a key part of the conversation. Bilateral trade between India and Italy reached approximately US$15 billion in 2023-24, while cumulative Italian foreign direct investment in India has surpassed US$4 billion since 2000. Beyond traditional commerce, the discussion focused on leveraging technology and innovation as drivers for long-term competitiveness and strategic value creation.
The meeting also strengthened commitments in defence and cyber-security cooperation. India and Italy agreed on measures to promote joint R&D, technology transfer, and enhanced operational resilience. Cyber-governance and secure digital infrastructure were highlighted as critical pillars for sustaining strategic collaboration in the years ahead.
The crucial dialogue at the G20 reflects a shift from conventional trade ties to a strategic, innovation-driven partnership. By integrating technology, security, and governance, India and Italy are setting the groundwork for a cooperative framework that balances economic growth with responsible and secure technological development.
