Cybercrime in Gujarat has risen sharply, with data showing a thirty percent increase in cases over the past five years. This surge continues despite efforts by the CID Crime, Gujarat Police and government awareness initiatives. In the first nine months of 2025 up to September, cybercriminals have deceived citizens of an enormous one thousand eleven crore rupees.
Investment fraud remains the most profitable method for scammers. Promises of high returns led to 9,240 people losing a total of three hundred ninety seven crore rupees to such schemes. Fraud involving fake identities, OTP scams and credit card misuse has also increased. Criminals used impersonation tactics to steal one hundred thirty seven crore rupees from 27,816 victims.
The pace of these crimes has increased rapidly. In 2020, Gujarat recorded an average of one hundred fifty five online fraud complaints every day, which was almost six per hour. By 2025, this number has climbed to an average of five hundred twenty one complaints per day, which is around twenty one per hour. Over five years, citizens have filed 4.81 lakh complaints, and total losses have reached three thousand three hundred eighty seven crore rupees. The average loss per complaint has stayed almost the same, moving from seventy thousand three hundred thirteen rupees in 2020 to seventy one thousand two hundred four rupees in 2025.
Cyber experts say that the methods used by criminals are changing. Scammers are increasingly targeting vulnerable groups, including pensioners and senior citizens who live alone. They often use fear based tactics, such as pretending to be police or CBI officials and threatening victims with a “digital house arrest”. Some victims are forced to download harmful applications that allow criminals to empty their bank accounts. Authorities continue to investigate these networks, but officials stress that public awareness is still the strongest protection against such fraud.
