A coordinated cyber operation has led to the arrest of four men involved in a large-scale online fraud in which a businessman from the city lost more than Rs 54 lakh. The case was registered on April 17, 2025 under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The cybercrime team, headed by Superintendent of Police, Cyber Crime Geetanjali Khandelwal with guidance from DSP A Venkatesh and supervision by Inspector Eram Rizvi, conducted planned raids in Ambarnath West, Ulhasnagar and Surat. Local police units supported the action.
The victim, Manish Aggarwal, who owns a steel business, had applied for a Toyota dealership. Soon after, fraudsters posing as officials from Toyota Kirloskar Motors contacted him using fake identities. They even issued a forged Letter of Intent and convinced him to transfer Rs 54,16,790/- into two bank accounts. The company later confirmed that the communication was fake and the documents were forged.
Police arrested Mubarak Ali of age 24, Ankit Jha of age 25 and Dharmendra Kumar of age 36 from Thane and Kalyan, and Santosh Yadav of age 29 from Surat. The investigation found that the group used several mule accounts to move the money. Police recovered bank passbooks, ATM cards, SIM cards and mobile phones during the raids.
According to officials, each accused had a specific role. Some opened and sold mule accounts, others supplied them to their handlers and some collected accounts from unsuspecting people. The police are now checking the group’s links with contacts in Jharkhand and Bihar.
Authorities have urged citizens to always check official communication, avoid offers that come without verification and never send money without confirming details directly. The cybercrime helpline 1930 can be used for quick assistance.
