Tech Trouble in Nagpur: 7 Employees Accused of Rs 4.83 Crore Refund Scam

In a case that highlights the dark side of digital convenience, seven employees of a tech firm in Nagpur have landed in legal trouble for allegedly orchestrating a massive internal scam worth Rs 4.83 crore. Authorities have registered a case under relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act, following the revelation of fraudulent activities between December 2023 and February 2025.

The deception came to light when the quality control team flagged unusual patterns during a routine data audit. The firm’s general manager, upon deeper inspection, uncovered a refund racket where money was being returned without any defective products being received back, breaching the company’s return policy.

According to internal protocols, refunds are strictly allowed only when a customer returns a faulty product purchased through e-commerce platforms. However, the investigation suggests that a group of staff members manipulated the system by crafting fake customer profiles and issuing illegitimate refunds.

“Refunds can only be issued when customers return faulty products purchased via e-commerce platforms,” an official stated. This breach of policy allowed the accused employees to quietly funnel crores from the company into false transactions.

The accused allegedly collaborated to exploit the refund system over several months, causing significant financial harm. “Seven employees collectively siphoned off Rs 4.83 crore,” said a police official, confirming the scale of the financial breach.

The case is now under active investigation, with authorities working to trace the money trail and determine the full scope of internal involvement. Legal action is underway, and further arrests or charges could follow.

This incident sheds light on the growing vulnerability of internal systems, especially in firms relying heavily on automated processes for customer service and operations. As technology evolves, so does the creativity of fraud—but so must the vigilance.
