Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg believes that smart glasses will become the main way people interact with artificial intelligence in the future. Speaking during Meta’s second quarter earnings call, Zuckerberg said he is confident that users without AI glasses will be at a clear disadvantage in the years ahead.
“I continue to think that glasses are basically going to be the ideal form factor for AI, because you can let an AI see what you see throughout the day, hear what you hear, [and] talk to you,” he said. He added that adding displays to glasses will increase their value, offering new features like a wider, holographic field of view with Meta’s upcoming Orion AR glasses or simpler displays for everyday use.
Zuckerberg stated, “I think in the future, if you don’t have glasses that have AI — or some way to interact with AI — I think you’re … probably [going to] be at a pretty significant cognitive disadvantage compared to other people.”
Meta has already released smart glasses in partnership with Ray-Ban and more recently with Oakley. These glasses allow users to take photos and videos, listen to music, and ask Meta AI about what they are seeing. According to eyewear company EssilorLuxottica, sales of Ray-Ban Meta glasses have more than tripled year-over-year.
Despite the early success, Zuckerberg believes there is more to explore in display technology. He noted that this has been the focus of Meta’s Reality Labs for years. Reality Labs is the division responsible for Meta’s AR and VR research, but it has been losing large amounts of money. In the second quarter alone, it reported an operating loss of $4.53 billion. Since 2020, it has lost nearly $70 billion.
Other tech companies are also exploring new AI-focused devices. This year, OpenAI bought a startup led by a former Apple executive in a $6.5 billion deal to develop AI consumer products. Some startups have also tested new ideas, including AI pins and pendants, but glasses currently seem the most practical and familiar to users.
Zuckerberg said, “The other thing that’s awesome about glasses is they are going to be the ideal way to blend the physical and digital worlds together. So the whole Metaverse vision, I think, is going to … end up being extremely important, too, and AI is going to accelerate that.”
