YouTube Updates Monetization Policies to Combat AI-Generated “Slop” Content

YouTube, the video-sharing giant owned by Google, has announced updated monetization policies aimed at curbing the proliferation of AI-generated “slop” content on its platform. The revisions seek to prevent creators from generating revenue from “inauthentic” content, specifically targeting mass-produced and repetitive videos created using artificial intelligence tools.

While unoriginal content has historically been ineligible for monetization under the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), this new update is designed to more effectively identify and categorize AI-churned content as inauthentic. Rene Ritchie, YouTube’s Head of Editorial & Creator Liaison, clarified that this is a minor adjustment to existing YPP policies.

The goal is to enhance the detection of mass-produced or repetitive content, which is often perceived as spam by viewers and has been non-monetizable for years.

This policy update underscores YouTube’s renewed emphasis on its long-standing requirement for original and authentic content as a prerequisite for monetization eligibility. The move comes in response to the rapid rise of AI technology, which has led to a significant surge in AI-generated videos, music, and even fake news content across digital platforms.
