YouTube to use AI to spot underage users

YouTube is getting ready to launch a new artificial intelligence system that can determine whether a user is younger than eighteen, even if they make up their age when they register. The site will start testing this AI age estimation function in the US on August 13 and will eventually roll it out to additional users.

This action is being taken at a time when governments around the globe are pressuring internet giants to assume greater accountability for children’s online safety. Countries including the UK, EU nations, and a number of US states have implemented new regulations in recent months requiring platforms to confirm users’ ages and keep children from seeing offensive or dangerous information.

To determine a user’s age, YouTube’s AI will consider a number of signs. This covers the kinds of material people often view, the kinds of videos they look for, and the age of their YouTube account. The system will attempt to determine if a user is a teenager based on these variables. Regardless of the date of birth the user provided when registering, the system will automatically impose certain limitations if it determines that the user is under the age of 18.

Age-restricted video access is blocked, personalized advertisements are disabled, “take a break” alerts are displayed, and repetitive recommendations on delicate subjects like body image are decreased. Additionally, YouTube will show privacy notices anytime a teen tries to publish or comment on a video.

The website has made it clear that users who believe they were mistakenly reported as minors can submit a government ID, a credit card, or a selfie to demonstrate their true age.

In a blog post, YouTube’s Director of Product Management, James Beser, stated that the firm is initially testing the system on a limited number of US users to gauge its effectiveness. The business plans to expand the functionality to other areas if it becomes effective.

Google, the parent company of YouTube, has already discussed the use of machine learning for age identification. Earlier this year, the corporation declared that AI will be used more extensively to enhance online safety on all of its platforms.

YouTube has cautioned content producers, nevertheless, that a loss in their ad income may result from a decline in their adolescent audience. Teen users will only see generic advertisements, which might lower the total value of those ad impressions. However, YouTube anticipates that most artists will only have a slight impact.
