YouTube testing Android Auto support with audio-only playback and strict limitations

A new update suggests that YouTube may soon expand its presence to in-car systems, though with significant restrictions aimed at driver safety. The feature has reportedly been spotted by a user on Reddit, but there is no official confirmation yet, so the information should be treated with caution.

According to the report, YouTube is being integrated into Android Auto, allowing users to control playback directly from their vehicle’s display. However, the functionality is limited compared to the regular mobile app experience.

The platform works in an audio-only mode on Android Auto. This means videos are not displayed on the car screen. Instead, users can listen to content such as podcasts, interviews, and news videos, similar to how music or podcast apps function. The restriction aligns with Android Auto’s focus on reducing distractions while driving.

Basic controls like play, pause, and skip are available. However, users cannot skip forward within a video. The skip option only allows moving to the next video. There is also no browsing interface, which limits how users can discover or select content.

Another key limitation is that the feature requires background playback support. This means users must have a YouTube Premium subscription for it to work. Without it, access to this functionality may not be available.

While this update marks a step toward bringing YouTube into in-car ecosystems, its usage remains tightly controlled. The focus clearly stays on safety, ensuring that drivers are not visually distracted while accessing content.
