YouTube introduces parent-code to help families manage kids viewing on TVs

Parents using YouTube on smart TVs now have a new way to manage what their children watch and which accounts they can access. The platform has announced a new parent code feature aimed at giving families more control over shared screens at home.

In a blog post, the company said, “We’re happy to share that we’re launching a new parent code feature that you can turn on to prevent kids from watching YouTube signed out or accessing accounts meant for older members of your household.” It added, “We hope this change gives you added comfort in knowing kids cannot use accounts and features on your smart TV that aren’t meant for them, while also making recommendations in your profile more relevant to your interests rather than what you previously watched together as a family.” The feature is being rolled out gradually and will reach all users over the next few days.

Once enabled, the parent code adds a layer of protection on smart TVs. The code must be entered to watch YouTube while signed out, to access accounts meant for older members of the household who are 13 years or older or the applicable age in a user’s country and to remove accounts from the TV device. This helps ensure that children stay within age appropriate profiles and viewing settings.

Setting up the parent code is a simple process. Users need to open the YouTube app on their smart TV, go to the left side of the homepage and select Settings. From there, they should choose the Parent Code tab and follow the on-screen instructions to set or reset a 4-digit code. It is important to note that turning on a parent code on a smart TV does not affect YouTube accounts signed in on other devices.
