YouTube has announced a new AI-powered feature that automatically enhances video resolution, aiming to deliver a better viewing experience for users.
The platform shared that it is beginning with videos uploaded below 1080p, upscaling them from standard definition to high definition. The goal is to eventually support resolutions up to 4K. “We’re starting with videos uploaded below 1080p, upscaling them from SD to HD, with the goal to support resolutions up to 4K in the near future. Creators will retain complete control over their library, as both original files and original video resolution will be kept intact, with a clear option to opt-out of these enhancements,” YouTube said in a blog post.
YouTube clarified that viewers will still be able to watch videos in their original uploaded resolution. The enhanced versions will be clearly labelled, allowing viewers to choose their preferred playback option.
In addition to the AI upscaling feature, YouTube is expanding the thumbnail file limit from 2MB to 50MB. This will allow creators to generate and display 4K-resolution thumbnails for their videos.
The company also mentioned that it has begun testing larger video uploads with select creators to enable even higher quality original uploads. “We’ve begun testing larger video uploads with select creators as well to enable even higher quality original uploads,” the video streaming platform stated.
These updates are part of YouTube’s broader plan to enhance its viewing experience, particularly on television screens. The company said the rollout is aimed at transforming user content into what it described as a “premier experience on TV”.
Additionally, viewers can expect new shopping features, immersive settings, and improvements to contextual search on TV devices as part of YouTube’s next phase of innovation.
