YouTube launches Gemini-powered ‘Ask’ feature for real-time video interaction and AI summaries

YouTube has started rolling out a new Gemini-powered “Ask” feature that allows users to engage with videos in real time by asking questions, getting instant explanations, and receiving AI-generated summaries — all without leaving the video player.

The new “Ask” button, powered by Google’s Gemini AI, enables viewers to chat directly with the video they are watching. Users can ask questions related to the video’s content, clarify topics, take quick quizzes, or get brief recaps of key sections. The tool also includes suggested prompts inside the chat window, making it easier for users to start conversations with Gemini.

Currently, the feature is being introduced for select English-language videos and appears below the video player, between the Share and Download buttons. It is available on Android, iPhone, and desktop platforms.

YouTube explained that the Ask feature is designed to make learning and exploring through videos more interactive and informative. Instead of pausing to search for related information, users can now get answers and additional context directly within the app. The AI system, powered by large language models (LLMs), generates detailed and context-aware responses by analyzing both YouTube’s content and relevant web information. This helps users gain a better understanding of the subject matter and discover related videos instantly.

The integration of Gemini AI gives the feature an advanced conversational edge, allowing for meaningful exchanges around complex topics. Whether users are watching educational tutorials, news explainers, or entertainment videos, the feature enhances the overall viewing experience by blending video streaming with real-time AI assistance.

How to use YouTube’s ‘Ask’ feature:

  • Tap the ‘Ask’ button with the Gemini star icon below the video frame.
  • Choose a suggested prompt or type your own question in the chat box.
  • Interact with Gemini AI to get explanations, summaries, or related insights.
  • Provide feedback by selecting the thumbs up or thumbs down icons on the response.

The new Ask feature represents YouTube’s growing focus on integrating AI to make video consumption more engaging and educational. As Gemini continues to evolve, YouTube is expected to expand this functionality to more languages and video categories in the coming months.
