Xiaomi has taken a major step into large home appliances by starting operations at its first dedicated factory for the category in Wuhan, China.
The Wuhan Xiaomi Smart Home Appliance Factory Phase I is located in the East Lake High-tech Development Zone, also known as Optics Valley. This facility is Xiaomi Group’s 3rd major smart factory, following its smartphone smart factory and its automotive super factory. The move signals a clear shift from outsourcing appliances to manufacturing them in-house.
The factory’s first product has already been revealed. Xiaomi announced that the Mi Home Central Air Conditioner Pro is “coming soon.” It will be the company’s first self-produced central air conditioner and features a dual fan wheel design. With this launch, Xiaomi gains full control over product design, quality standards and production processes, a model more commonly associated with the automotive sector than with home appliances.
Smart manufacturing plays a central role at the new facility. Key components undergo 100% quality inspection, ensuring consistency and reliability. The production line is designed for high efficiency, with 1 air conditioner rolling off the line every 6.5 seconds. The entire factory is connected to Xiaomi’s Surge Intelligent Manufacturing Platform, allowing closer quality control, faster product iteration and deeper integration with Xiaomi’s broader smart home ecosystem.
The speed at which the factory was built highlights Xiaomi’s growing manufacturing ambitions. The project progressed from agreement signing in August 2024 to structural topping-out by January 2025. This rapid development earned recognition for showcasing the so-called “Optics Valley speed.”
Phase I of the factory focuses entirely on air conditioning. It includes 6 sub-factories that cover both household and central air conditioning systems, managing everything from assembly to final production. With this setup, Xiaomi is positioning itself to deliver smarter, more reliable and potentially more affordable central air conditioning solutions to a wider market.
