xAI Launches Grok Code Fast 1, A Lightweight AI Model for Faster Software Development

xAI, the artificial intelligence startup founded by Elon Musk, has unveiled Grok Code Fast 1, a new lightweight coding-focused AI model. Released on Thursday, the company described it as a full-stack coding agent with agentic capabilities, capable of building both backend and frontend software. The model has been designed for speed, with the company claiming it generates output faster than rival coding tools. For one week, developers can access the model free of cost on several third-party platforms.

In a newsroom post, xAI explained that existing coding models often slow down when handling functions that involve reasoning loops and tool calling. Grok Code Fast 1 aims to resolve this by offering faster output generation in agentic workflows.

Although specific details of the architecture were not disclosed, the company said the model was built on a new framework. It has been pre-trained on programming-related content and post-trained with real-world pull requests. To further refine the model’s behaviour, xAI partnered with multiple third-party platforms for agentic task execution. Grok Code Fast 1 is also capable of calling tools such as grep, terminal, and file editing.

According to xAI, the model works across the full software development stack and supports programming languages including TypeScript, Python, Java, Rust, C++, and Go. “It can complete common programming tasks with minimal oversight,” the company stated. Internal evaluations showed that the model scored 70.8 per cent on the full subset of the SWE-Bench-Verified benchmark.

For the seven-day free period starting August 28, Grok Code Fast 1 is available on platforms including GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Cline, Kilo Code, Roo Code, opencode, and Windsurf. The company has not confirmed if usage limits will apply during this trial phase.

After the free trial, pricing will be set at $0.20 (approximately Rs. 17) per million input tokens and $1.50 (approximately Rs. 132) per million output tokens. Cached input tokens will be charged at $0.02 (approximately Rs. 1.7).
