X to show more user profile information to improve trust and transparency

As AI makes it easier to create bots that mimic human behavior, Elon Musk’s X is testing a new feature to provide more information about user profiles. The goal is to help people better understand who they are interacting with on the platform.

According to Nikita Bier, X’s head of product, the social network will experiment with displaying details such as the account creation date, location, number of username changes, and how the account is using X’s service.

The feature aims to give users more context to determine whether an account is authentic or potentially operated by a bot or malicious actor spreading misinformation. For example, if an account claims to be in the U.S. but shows activity from another country, or if the app was downloaded from an international store, users may question its legitimacy. Multiple username changes or other signals could also raise red flags.

Bier said testing will start next week with X employee profiles to gather feedback before a wider rollout. Users will have the option to hide this information, though opting out may be highlighted on their profiles. In regions where revealing location could pose risks, X may display only the country instead of a more specific region.

Providing context about user accounts is not new in social media. Instagram, for example, allows users to see similar details through its “About this profile” feature, including how long the account has existed, its country, and username change history. Instagram head Adam Mosseri noted that these signals help users decide how much to trust an account, and the platform may add more context in the future.

If rolled out, X’s changes could improve transparency and trust on the platform, though scammers and bots often find ways to bypass such measures. The announcement comes after X recently removed 1.7 million bots involved in reply spam, highlighting ongoing efforts to clean up the platform.
