X sets final deadline as twitter.com domain is phased out

The platform formerly known as Twitter is moving another step away from its past identity. X has begun retiring the twitter.com domain and is asking certain users to update their login security settings to avoid being locked out of their accounts.

The company has notified users who sign in with hardware security keys or passkeys that were previously registered under twitter.com. These login methods do not automatically carry over to the new x.com domain. Users must reenroll their credentials under x.com before November 10. If they miss this deadline their accounts may be temporarily inaccessible.

This update marks one of the last major steps in the shift from Twitter to X. Since the platform was acquired in 2022 it has seen changes in design policies and branding. Moving to x.com is considered the final phase of the transition.

In a statement from its Safety account X explained that security keys are linked to specific domains. Devices registered to twitter.com cannot verify identity on x.com unless users manually update them. The platform emphasized that this change affects only those using physical keys or passkeys. Users who log in with passwords or authentication apps should not experience interruptions. However X is urging anyone who relies on physical login devices to complete the update soon to avoid access issues.

How to update the login method:

  • Check if your account uses a hardware key or passkey
  • Go to Settings and Privacy > Security and Account Access > Two Factor Authentication
  • Reenroll your security key or passkey under x.com
  • Update any saved logins reflecting the new domain

With this transition X closes one of the last remaining links to the original Twitter name and completes the shift to its new identity.
