Elon Musk’s platform X has started rolling out a new transparency feature on user profiles that highlights key information about an account’s history and origin. The feature, called “About this account”, displays details such as the user’s location, the number of times the username has been changed, the original join date and how the app was downloaded. It aims to help users identify inauthentic behaviour on a platform where bots often imitate real accounts and where AI driven activity is becoming more difficult to detect.
The company first mentioned the feature in October when Nikita Bier, the head of product at X, said it would be tested on his profile and on the profiles of employees. The goal is to give users enough context to decide whether an account is genuine or attempting to spread misinformation. For example, if an account claims to be from a state in the United States but activity shows a different region, users may question its purpose.
In recent days more users have reported seeing the feature appear on their profiles. This follows a request for stronger transparency measures to which Bier replied with a promise to act within seventy two hours. The feature is easy to access. On the web and mobile app, tapping the joined date opens a page that shows the join date, base location, username change history and how the app was downloaded, such as through the United States App Store or Google Play.
The rollout is still limited. According to a sources many users can view their own information but cannot yet see the same details on other profiles. X seems to be giving people time to confirm their data and update their privacy choices. Users can select whether to display their country or a wider region through a setting under privacy and safety. Instagram already provides a similar transparency option which makes X the latest platform to introduce this feature.
