WordPress has unveiled an early version of its experimental AI development tool called Telex, announced by co founder and Automattic CEO Matt Mullenweg at the WordCamp US 2025 conference in Portland. Mullenweg described Telex as a “V0 or Lovable, but specifically for WordPress,” referencing popular AI powered coding services.
Telex is designed to help developers create Gutenberg blocks, the modular elements that make up WordPress sites, including text, images, and columns. During his keynote, Mullenweg demonstrated how the tool allowed one developer to quickly build a simple marketing animation.
Currently available at telex.automattic.ai, Telex is marked “experimental.” Users can enter a prompt describing the content block they want, and the tool generates a .zip file that can be installed as a plug-in on a WordPress site or tested in WordPress Playground, a browser based environment that runs WordPress without hosting.
The project follows WordPress’s announcement earlier this year of a dedicated AI team tasked with building tools that align with the platform’s long term goals. While early testers reported that some generated projects failed or required extra work, Mullenweg emphasised that Telex remains a prototype but holds great promise for simplifying web development.
“When we think about democratized publishing, like embedded in that, is very core to WordPress’ mission, has been taking things that were difficult to do, that required knowledge of coding or anything else, and … made it accessible to people. Made it accessible in a radically open way, in every language, at low cost, open source — we actually own it and have rights to it,” he said.
Mullenweg also showcased a browser based WordPress help assistant built during Contributor Day in just a few hours and praised his favourite AI browser, Perplexity’s Comet, for its potential to integrate with WordPress.
On the ongoing legal dispute with hosting provider WP Engine, Mullenweg offered only a short update, stating, “The quick update is, it’s working its way through the legal system. We trust in the fairness of the courts. If there’s any commentary, I’ll just say that there was a settlement conference, I showed up; the other CEO did not. But it is working its way through that. And that’s my only comment on that whole rigmarole.”
