Cybercrime Hits Nellore Woman Loses ₹2.46 Crore to Fake Investment Scheme

A woman from Nellore lost ₹2.46 crore to an inter-state cybercrime gang that promised high returns on small investments.

The local police have detained seven suspects related to the investment scam case. Superintendent of Police Krishna Kant shared the details during a press conference. Lalitha, living in Pogathota, came across an online investment marketing link on Instagram.

After clicking it, she was approached by a woman named Nishabasu, who convinced her that investing in online marketing would bring significant profits and offered her support throughout the process. Nishabasu directed Lalitha to download a specific mobile app as part of the scheme.

Tempted by the prospect of greater returns for larger investments, Lalitha borrowed money and made several deposits through the app, totaling ₹2,46,30,396 between January 23 and February 3. Later, the app showed a credited amount of ₹4,02,24,759 in her account, but her attempts to withdraw the funds were unsuccessful.

Realizing she had been scammed, Lalitha reported fake investment scam incident at the Chinnabazaar Police Station in Nellore on March 9. Following her complaint, the police established a special team and ramped up their investigation using technical evidence, which led them to Chennai, Hyderabad, and Rajasthan.

The investigation pinpointed Ramaram from Rajasthan as the main suspect, along with his accomplices Gogaram, Hemath Kumar, Kailash, and Nagaran. Two more suspects from Hyderabad, Veereshwara Rao and M. Ravi was also identified.

On April 25, police arrested five suspects in Rajasthan and captured the two from Hyderabad on Saturday. Superintendent Krishna Kant stated that the arrested suspects are being interrogated for further information, and the investigation is still ongoing.
