Mangaluru Woman Duped of ₹61.15 Lakh in ‘Digital Arrest’ Scam

A woman from Mangaluru has become a victim of a complex “digital arrest” scam, losing ₹61.15 lakh to con artists impersonating law enforcement officials. This incident underscores the increasing danger of online impersonation schemes that exploit fear and intimidation to swindle unsuspecting victims.

The victim’s nightmare began when she received a call from someone claiming to be “Investigation Officer Sandeep” from Colaba Police Station. This fraudster asserted that her identity card had been misused for illegal activities, triggering a series of events aimed at creating panic.

After the initial call, the woman was contacted by two additional fraudsters who intensified the threats, cautioning her against discussing the ongoing “investigation” with anyone. This tactic of isolation is a typical feature of such scams, intended to stop victims from seeking help or verifying the claims.

To further the deception, a fourth fraudster reached out to the woman through a video call, carefully gathering her personal information. Overcome by fear and relentless pressure, the woman ended up transferring a total of ₹61,15,050 in several installments to different bank accounts provided by the scammers

Woman only came to realize she had been scammed when the fraudsters continued to demand more money, despite her substantial payments. It was then that she confided in her husband and children, leading to the understanding that she had fallen for an intricate con.

A case has been filed at the Cyber Economic and Narcotics (CEN) Crime Police Station, and investigations are currently in progress. Authorities are urging the public to be extremely cautious when receiving unsolicited calls or messages, particularly those that involve threats or requests for money, and to always verify the identity of callers claiming to represent official agencies.
