Wipro tightens hybrid work norms with mandatory 6-hour office rule

India’s IT sector is seeing a steady shift toward stricter workplace attendance, and Wipro has become the latest major firm to reinforce its work-from-office framework.

Wipro has revised its hybrid work policy, requiring employees to spend a minimum of 6 hours in the office on designated work-from-office days. The updated rules came into effect on January 1, 2026. While the requirement to work from the office at least 3 days a week remains unchanged, the 6-hour minimum stay, tracked through entry and exit punches, is a new addition.

The Bengaluru-based company, which employs around 234,000 people, has also linked attendance compliance more closely with leave management. Employees who fail to meet the weekly office attendance requirement will face leave deductions. In addition, those spending fewer than 6 hours in the office on a mandated day will see a half-day leave deducted, according to a report by a financial daily.

Wipro has also reduced the number of temporary remote working days allowed in a calendar year to 12, down from 15. These days can be used for personal health needs, illness, or caregiving responsibilities.

In an internal communication, the company reiterated its commitment to hybrid work. “We trust all associates will follow the policy in both letter and spirit as it supports collaboration across teams while providing flexibility,” the email reportedly said. The company clarified that the 6-hour rule applies only to minimum office presence and not total daily working hours, which remain 9.5 hours. Employees are expected to complete the remaining hours from home and ensure timely delivery of assigned tasks.

The move comes as the $283 billion IT industry faces slower revenue growth and increasing pressure from artificial intelligence-driven automation. Industry experts say faster software development cycles now demand closer coordination. “Earlier, applications used to be rolled out every 2 or 3 years. Now, the way software is designed and coded is different, with applications being rolled out in as little as 8 weeks,” said Guruprasad Srinivasan of Quess Corp.

Other IT majors have taken similar steps. Tata Consultancy Services introduced a 5-day office attendance policy last year, linking variable pay to attendance levels. Infosys has mandated at least 10 office days per month for employees at job level 5 and below.

The broader trend suggests a growing industry push toward in-person collaboration as project timelines shrink and delivery models evolve.
