In a move to protect content quality and reliability, Wikipedia has updated its content policy to restrict the use of artificial intelligence in article creation and editing.
The platform has clearly stated that AI-generated text is not allowed in articles. According to the updated guidelines, “The use of LLMs to generate or rewrite article content is prohibited.” This applies to content created using tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, DeepSeek, and similar systems.
Wikipedia explained that AI-generated content can conflict with its core policies, especially around verifiability and neutrality. Since AI tools can sometimes change the meaning of information or produce unsupported claims, they may affect the accuracy of articles. The issue of hallucinations in AI-generated text is also a major concern for the platform.
At the same time, Wikipedia has allowed 2 specific exceptions for editors. First, contributors can use AI tools to suggest basic copyedits to their own writing. These suggestions can be added only after human review and must not include new content generated by AI. Editors have been advised to use such tools carefully.
Second, the platform allows the use of AI chatbots for translating articles from other languages into English. However, these translations must follow strict guidelines. Editors are required to label such content as “automatically translated” and ensure it goes through proper human review before approval.
The update comes as concerns grow over the increasing presence of AI-generated content across online platforms. Many users have raised questions about the authenticity and reliability of such content, especially when it replaces human-written material.
With this policy change, Wikipedia aims to maintain the credibility and quality of its articles while allowing limited and controlled use of AI tools under human supervision.
