WhatsApp working on noise cancellation feature to improve call quality

In an effort to enhance user experience, WhatsApp is developing a new feature aimed at improving voice and video calls by reducing background noise. The feature, called noise cancellation, is currently under development and is not yet available for beta users.

This update follows the recent rollout of voice and video calling on WhatsApp Web, which includes end-to-end encryption for secure communication.

How will the noise cancellation work?

The upcoming feature will use advanced technology to detect and reduce unwanted background sounds such as traffic or wind. It will isolate the user’s voice and minimise other audio signals in real time.

This will help users experience clearer and more focused calls, even in noisy environments.

Noise cancellation to be enabled by default

WhatsApp plans to enable the noise cancellation feature by default on Android devices in a future update. It will automatically activate when a call starts, ensuring improved audio quality from the beginning.

Users will receive a notification when the feature is turned on. They will also have the option to disable it anytime through the call settings, especially in situations where background sounds or music are needed.

Will it impact end-to-end encryption?

The feature will not affect end-to-end encryption. The audio processing will happen directly on the user’s device, where sound is filtered through the microphone before being encrypted and transmitted.

This ensures that users get better call clarity without compromising privacy or security. WhatsApp is currently refining how the system detects and filters background noise.
