After years of waiting, WhatsApp is reportedly bringing voice and video calling to its Web platform. The new feature, currently available to select beta users, adds end-to-end encrypted calls and screen-sharing support, aligning Web functionality with WhatsApp’s Windows and Mac desktop apps. Previously, WhatsApp Web only supported text messaging and media sharing, while calling was limited to desktop applications.
According to reports, the feature has been in development for around a year and is initially limited to one-to-one chats. Users enrolled in the WhatsApp Web beta programme can place calls directly from their browser without installing any desktop app. A preview shows that calls can be started by opening a chat and tapping the call button on the top right corner.
Calls on WhatsApp Web are protected with end-to-end encryption using the Signal protocol, ensuring the same security as on Android, iOS, and desktop apps. Additionally, users can share their screens during video calls, making it practical for presentations or collaborative discussions. This update is particularly useful for Linux users or those who prefer using WhatsApp in a browser.
Meta appears to be expanding WhatsApp’s capabilities further, reportedly working on features like a Close Friends option for Status updates and a premium subscription tier offering enhanced personalization and productivity tools.
The new voice and video call support marks a significant step in making WhatsApp Web a full-fledged alternative to desktop apps, providing users with a seamless and secure communication experience directly from their browser.
