WhatsApp is testing a new feature that will allow users to add personalised tags to group members. The feature is available to selected beta testers on the latest WhatsApp beta version for Android and can be used in both new and existing groups. Each tag can be up to thirty characters long and is designed to help members clearly identify roles within a group.
A technology blog tracking WhatsApp updates reported that the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.17.42 includes this new group member tag option. The feature lets users assign a custom tag to themselves inside a specific group. These tags can reflect professional roles, interests or responsibilities. Examples include tags such as Coach, Project Manager or Moderator. The tags are chosen and managed by the users themselves and do not require approval from group admins.
The report states that tags cannot include special characters, checkmarks or links. Users can edit or change their tags whenever needed. The tags remain visible only inside the group where they are created and do not appear in other chats. They will continue to show even if a user reinstalls WhatsApp or switches to a new device.
The feature is currently limited to users enrolled in the beta programme. A broader rollout is expected once testing is complete.
Users can add a tag by opening WhatsApp, selecting the group, going to the Chat Info screen, tapping their name and saving the tag they choose.
