WhatsApp tests group chat history sharing feature for iOS users

Keeping new group members in the loop may soon get easier, as WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature on iOS that allows recent group chat history to be shared when someone is added to a group.

According to a report, the feature has been spotted in the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS version 26.2.10.73. The update is aimed at helping newly added members quickly understand recent conversations that took place before they joined. Until now, new participants could not see earlier messages and often had to ask others to explain missed discussions.

As per the report, WhatsApp will allow users to share up to 100 recent messages from a group chat with a new member. These messages can include conversations from the last 14 days. Once shared, the messages are delivered instantly, enabling the new member to catch up without delay.

The feature will not be enabled by default. WhatsApp is expected to give full control to the person adding the new member, allowing them to decide whether chat history should be shared or not.

To access the option, users need to add a new participant through the group chat info screen by tapping on “Add Member” and selecting a contact. If available, an option to share recent messages appears at the bottom of the screen. Users can choose to share all 100 messages or select a smaller number. WhatsApp also displays confirmation alerts 3 times before messages are sent, ensuring users are aware of their action.

Messages shared with new members will appear in a different colour for easy identification. Existing group members are notified through a system message that shows who shared the chat history. The shared messages are taken directly from the device of the person adding the new member and remain protected with end-to-end encryption during delivery.

The report noted that the feature is being rolled out gradually to select iOS beta testers. While there is no confirmed timeline for a wider release, some beta users can already share chat history with members who do not yet have the feature enabled.
