WhatsApp has introduced a much-anticipated feature that allows users to instantly translate messages within the app, making multilingual conversations easier than ever.
Starting today, iPhone and Android users can long-press any message in a chat, tap “Translate”, and view the message in their preferred language — all without needing to copy and paste into another app. The feature works across individual chats, group messages, and even Channel updates.
At launch, Android users will have translation support for six major languages: English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian and Arabic. iPhone users, however, get a wider range with support for over 19 languages from the start.
Android users also get an additional advantage: an option to enable automatic translation for entire chat threads, making it easier to follow conversations in real time without repeated manual translations.
While not quite futuristic real-time voice translation or augmented reality overlays, this new feature brings a practical solution to everyday communication challenges. And with WhatsApp’s global user base of over 3 billion people, this move could significantly improve cross-language communication worldwide.
Importantly, WhatsApp has assured users that translations happen directly on their device, meaning the platform cannot read or store the messages, keeping privacy intact.
The feature is rolling out gradually starting today, with support for more languages expected in the near future.
