A quiet change spotted in a test build suggests that WhatsApp is getting ready to update how users search and share GIFs inside the app, driven by an upcoming shutdown of a key service.
WhatsApp is expected to replace Tenor with Klipy as one of its default GIF providers in a future update. The development was identified in an iOS beta version 26.2.10.70, currently available through Apple TestFlight. While the feature is still under development, the change has been confirmed for a later release.
The shift is largely being driven by Tenor’s decision to shut down its API services on June 30, 2026. The platform has already stopped accepting new developer registrations. With Tenor’s exit approaching, WhatsApp is moving quickly to ensure GIF search and sharing continue to work without interruption.
Klipy is set to take over as the replacement. The platform offers a large library of GIFs, memes, and stickers, along with an official API designed for third-party integrations. For most users, the change is expected to be seamless, with the overall GIF search experience remaining familiar.
WhatsApp plans to migrate existing Tenor users to Klipy automatically. No user action will be required. Once the switch is complete, GIFs sourced from Klipy will carry a Klipy label, clearly identifying the new provider.
Currently, WhatsApp supports GIF searches through both Giphy and Tenor. Availability depends on region and account configuration, with some users seeing only one provider. When Tenor goes offline, users who relied on it will be redirected to Klipy instead. Accounts already using Giphy will remain unaffected.
WhatsApp is not the only platform making this move. Other apps that depend on Tenor, including Discord, have also begun transitioning to Klipy ahead of the June deadline.
Although WhatsApp has not announced an exact rollout date, the migration is expected to be completed before July 01, 2026, to avoid any disruption to GIF-related features.
