WhatsApp Beta to let users chat across different messaging apps across Europe

WhatsApp is testing a new feature in Europe that could allow users to message friends on other messaging platforms. The feature, called “third party chats,” was spotted in WhatsApp for Android beta version 2.25.33.8 and is seen as a move to comply with the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA). The update aims to make WhatsApp more interoperable with other apps while keeping user security intact.

The new interoperability feature is gradually rolling out to beta users who can activate it through Settings > Account > Third party chats. Once enabled, users will be able to send messages, photos, videos, voice messages and documents to contacts on supported platforms. Incoming messages can be managed through a combined inbox or a separate inbox for third party messages, and users can customise push notifications, media upload quality and in-app alerts for messages from other apps.

Currently, the only app supported by WhatsApp’s interoperability feature is BirdyChat. WhatsApp will not decide which apps get integrated, instead third-party developers need to work on the integration and submit a request to be included. Apps must meet WhatsApp’s security and encryption standards to ensure conversations remain protected. Future integrations may include platforms like ChatGPT, which has already introduced a Group Chats feature similar to WhatsApp’s group messaging option.

Some WhatsApp features like status updates, stickers and disappearing messages will not be supported through interoperability. The update may also allow users who were previously blocked on WhatsApp to contact recipients via third party apps. This step highlights WhatsApp’s effort to meet EU regulations while expanding its functionality for cross platform messaging.
