WhatsApp launches official app for Apple Watch

WhatsApp has officially launched its first dedicated app for the Apple Watch, allowing iPhone users to access the messaging platform directly from their wrist. With the new app, users can now receive call notifications, read entire messages, and record and send voice messages without needing to take out their iPhones.

“This new experience will help you stay on top of your chats without needing to pull out your iPhone,” WhatsApp shared in a blog post. “In addition to reading and responding to messages, for the first time, WhatsApp on Apple Watch will now support many requested features.”

The new app also enables users to react to messages and view more of their chat history on-screen. Images and stickers will now appear clearer, offering a smoother and more interactive experience. Meta has confirmed that all personal messages and calls remain protected with end-to-end encryption.

To use WhatsApp on Apple Watch, users need an Apple Watch Series 4 or later, running watchOS 10 or newer. Meta has also said that more features will be added to the app in the future.

Before this launch, iPhone users had relied on various workarounds to access WhatsApp on their Apple Watches, such as third-party apps or notification mirroring. These solutions allowed users to view and reply to messages, but lacked full functionality.

The official Apple Watch app follows the release of WhatsApp’s iPad app earlier this year. That update introduced video and audio calls with up to 32 participants, screen sharing, and the option to switch between front and rear cameras.

Meanwhile, Snapchat has also rolled out its own Apple Watch app, which lets users preview incoming messages and reply using the keyboard, Scribble, Dictation, or emojis. However, Snapchat’s app does not allow users to view images or videos.

WhatsApp remains the world’s most popular messaging platform, with more than 3 billion users as of May 2025. The Apple Watch continues to hold its position as the best-selling smartwatch globally.
