WhatsApp Introduces New Scam Detection Tools for Group and Individual Chats

WhatsApp has rolled out new scam detection features aimed at improving user safety in both group and individual chats. These updates are part of the platform’s ongoing efforts to fight scams and protect users from suspicious activity. According to a recent update, more than 6.8 million suspicious accounts have been banned in the first half of 2025.

For group chats, WhatsApp has introduced a new “safety overview” feature. This alerts users when they are added to a group by someone who is not in their contact list. It also provides group details to help users recognise the group and includes safety tips. Users will also have the option to exit the group. Notifications from such groups will remain muted to avoid unnecessary disturbance.

In individual chats, WhatsApp is testing a new alert system designed to identify potential scammers before a conversation begins. If a user tries to chat with an unsaved number, WhatsApp may now show extra information to help users make better decisions. The platform said, “We’re exploring ways to caution you when you start a chat with someone not in your contacts by showing you additional context about who you’re messaging so you can make an informed decision.”

A recent blog post from the company highlighted how scammers often begin by sending text messages or contacting users through dating apps, then shift to social media or messaging platforms like WhatsApp, before attempting to move the conversation to payment or cryptocurrency platforms.

To help users stay protected, the company also shared important safety tips. These include enabling two-step verification, blocking and reporting suspicious accounts, and reading context cards before responding to unknown messages.

These new updates are expected to give users better control over their interactions and help them avoid falling into scam traps.
