WhatsApp adds member tags, text stickers, and event reminders for group chats

WhatsApp has announced a set of new features designed to make group conversations more organised, personal, and engaging. The Meta owned messaging platform is introducing member tags, text stickers, and event reminders to help users communicate more clearly and stay connected.

In a blog post, the company said users can now assign themselves a member tag in group chats. These tags give others more context about who they are or what role they play in that group. The tags are customisable for each group. For instance, the same person can be tagged as “Anna’s Dad” in one group and “Goalkeeper” in another. WhatsApp said this feature is being rolled out gradually.

Another new addition is text stickers. This feature allows users to turn any word they type into a sticker by entering it into the Sticker Search bar. These stickers can be shared directly in chats or added to sticker packs, based on the user’s preference. The company said this update is meant to help people express themselves in a more creative way.

WhatsApp has also introduced event reminders for group chats. When users create an event, they can now set early reminders for invitees. This is meant to help people remember important moments, whether it is leaving for a party or joining a scheduled call on time. The platform already supports event creation, pinning for visibility, RSVP collection, and sharing updates in one place.

According to WhatsApp, these new features build on several improvements it has made to group chats in recent years. These include the ability to share large files of up to 2GB, send HD photos and videos, use screen sharing, and start voice chats.

The company is also preparing to introduce more features in 2026. Some of the expected updates include usernames, a built in chat clearing tool to free up storage, a strict security mode for better account protection, and a mention @all option for group chats.

With these additions, WhatsApp aims to make group conversations more meaningful, easier to manage, and more fun for its global user base.
