WhatsApp is working on a new way to help users personalise their profiles. The Meta owned messaging service is developing support for cover photos for all users. Until now, this feature has only been available on WhatsApp Business accounts. The update shows a wider push by the platform to offer more customisation options. It is still in development so it may take some time before it reaches users in a future update.
A report shared by a feature tracker states that WhatsApp is preparing a feature that will let users upload a cover photo that appears on their profile. Once the change goes live, users will be able to select an image from the profile settings page. The cover photo will be shown at the top of the profile. The design is similar to the cover images used on platforms such as Facebook and LinkedIn.
The feature tracker also shared a screenshot that shows the early look of the cover photo selector. The platform is also expected to bring a new privacy control for this feature. Users will be able to choose who can view the cover photo. The privacy options being tested are Everyone, My contacts, and Nobody. These settings work in the same way as the visibility options available for Profile Photo and Status.
Selecting Everyone will make the cover photo visible to all WhatsApp users even if they are not saved as contacts. My contacts will restrict the visibility to people in the contact list. Choosing Nobody will hide the image from all users.
The cover photo feature has been spotted in development on WhatsApp beta version 2.25.32.2 for Android devices. The beta version is being rolled out through the Google Play beta programme. However, the feature is still not active even for testers. This means users will not see it yet. The update suggests that WhatsApp Business users will not be the only group who can set cover photos in the future. The feature is expected to roll out to everyone once testing is complete.
