West Bengal moves to build digital library at police academy to boost cybercrime training

The West Bengal government has begun steps to set up a modern public library at the Swami Vivekananda State Police Academy in Barrackpore to strengthen training and academic support for police personnel.

Official documents show that the proposed library is designed to meet the growing learning needs of police and other law enforcement professionals. It will also allow controlled access for students and members of the public. The facility is planned with desktop computers, laptops, scanning and photocopying units, and a barcode based digital system for library management and cataloguing.

Sources linked to the academy said a dedicated LAN and Wi Fi network will provide access to online databases, legal references, and digital training material relevant to present day policing. Police officials noted that such resources are now essential as personnel need to stay updated on cyber laws, procedural safeguards, and new crime patterns linked to digital platforms.

Easy access to digitised academic material is expected to improve investigation quality and support better decision making, officials added. The project also includes environmental measures such as dehumidifiers and air purifiers to protect books, documents, and electronic equipment, while ensuring a comfortable study space for long term research work.

Officials said public access is a key part of the initiative. Controlled entry for students and researchers is expected to encourage closer interaction between policing institutions and the academic community, especially in areas like criminal justice, policing systems, and cyber law.

The estimated cost of the project is around Rs 10.8 lakh. Authorities stressed that the initiative focuses on upgrading training capacity and knowledge infrastructure, in line with the state’s wider push to modernise police training and address technology driven crime.

Earlier, a newspaper had reported that cybercrime cases in West Bengal declined in 2023 compared to previous years, based on the latest National Crime Records Bureau data. The state reported 309 cybercrime cases in 2023, down from 401 in 2022 and 513 in 2021.
