In a major boost to India’s indigenous defence capability, 3 flight-trials of the VSHORADS missile system were successfully conducted from Chandipur off the coast of Odisha, the defence ministry said on Friday.
The trials were carried out to revalidate the system’s capability to neutralise high-speed aerial threats flying at varying speed, range and altitude. VSHORADS (Very Short-Range Air Defence System) is a man-portable air defence system designed and developed indigenously by Research Centre Imarat (RCI) in collaboration with other DRDO (Defence Research & Development Organisation) laboratories and Indian industry partners.
“During all the flight-tests, the missiles intercepted and destroyed the high-speed aerial targets mimicking enemy aircraft in various threat scenarios meeting all extreme engagement points,” the ministry said in a statement. “The tests were carried out in final deployment configuration, where target acquisition and missile firing were carried out by field operators,” it said.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the armed forces and industry partners for the successful trials. He said the 3 consecutive flight-tests mark a significant achievement and the system can soon be inducted into the armed forces.
The ministry added that flight data captured by range instruments such as telemetry systems, electro-optical tracking systems and radars deployed by the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur, validated the effectiveness of VSHORADS against a wide spectrum of aerial threats.
These user validation flight-trials were conducted in the presence of representatives from joint forces, along with senior officials from DRDO and development-cum-production partners.
The successful completion of 3 back-to-back trials strengthens the operational readiness of the indigenously developed VSHORADS system.
