Vivo Enters Mixed Reality Market with Vision Discovery Edition Headset

Vivo has officially entered the mixed reality (MR) market with the launch of its first MR headset, the Vision Discovery Edition. The announcement was made during the company’s thirtieth anniversary celebrations in Dongguan, China. The new device will compete with Apple’s Vision Pro, Meta’s Quest series, and Samsung’s upcoming Project Moohan headset. Vivo has claimed that the Vision Discovery Edition is slimmer and lighter than the “industry average.”

Vivo Vision Discovery Edition: Key Specifications

The headset is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 platform. According to Vivo, this chipset delivers up to 2.5 times higher GPU performance and nearly eight times better AI processing than the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2, which powers devices such as the Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3s.

The Vision Discovery Edition also features advanced input methods including 1.5-degree precision eye tracking and fingertip gesture recognition with twenty-six degrees of freedom. It supports a 175-degree vertical tracking range, allowing users to move beyond conventional “tap-through-screen” interactions and instead engage through natural “move-and-pinch” gestures.

For visuals, the headset is equipped with dual Micro-OLED panels that provide 8K binocular resolution. The display covers ninety-four per cent of the DCI-P3 colour gamut and maintains DeltaE<2 colour accuracy. Vivo stated that the visual quality is comparable to professional cinema monitors, offering calibrated brightness and consistent colours to reduce discomfort caused by mismatched visuals between both eyes.

Running on OriginOS Vision, the headset is designed for immersive entertainment, gaming, and productivity. Features include panoramic viewing from multiple angles, which can be used to watch live sports or e-sports events in split-screen mode. The headset can also simulate a “120-foot theatre screen,” creating an immersive environment for movies and other media.

Design and Build

The Vision Discovery Edition weighs 398 grams, measures 83 millimetres in height, and 40 millimetres in thickness. Vivo noted that this makes the headset twenty-six per cent smaller than the average in the industry. In comparison, the Meta Quest 3 weighs 515 grams, while the Apple Vision Pro ranges from 600 grams to 650 grams depending on the strap configuration.

Availability

While Vivo has showcased the device, it has not yet announced a commercial release date. Hong Yi, general manager of Smart Device Products at Vivo, shared on Chinese social media platform Weibo that the Vision Discovery Edition will not be available in 2025. He added that Vivo will begin accepting reservations for in-store demo sessions across China, according to a report from a common source.
