Victim lost Rs 1.8 crore after fraudsters posing as Income Tax officials in Navi Mumbai

Fraudsters posing as Income Tax officials approached victim a 58-year-old medical professor at a prestigious college in Navi Mumbai last month, claiming she owed Rs 8 lakh in taxes. As a result, she lost Rs 1.8 crore. The con artists demanded that she pay Rs 1.8 crore, which they would reimburse after the “investigation” was finished, and threatened to have her arrested.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), the victim was called on January 14 at approximately 3 p.m. by someone posing as an employee of the Income Tax department. The caller said that this was the last warning call and that she had not paid taxes.

He informed her that a company registered in Delhi was under her name and that she was liable for Rs 8 lakh. She responded that she was unaware of any such company and that someone must have illegally used her information.

The individual subsequently connected the call to a member of the Delhi Police, who shared documents that appeared to be authentic CBI paperwork. The following day, “the Delhi police officer” initiated a video call and requested that she furnish all her financial documents “for verification by the RBI.” Victim provided information about her investments, such as shares and fixed deposits, based on the assurance that these would be returned to her following the “verification” process.

The woman ultimately sent Rs 1,81,72,667 to the fraudsters  account. When she got another request for Rs 22 lakh, she told them that she had exhausted her savings.

The woman came to the realization that she had been scammed only after discussing the situation with a relative several days later, on February 16.
