Telecom operator Vi has announced the launch of its 5G services in Kochi, with Thiruvananthapuram set to go live from 20 August. The company has also expanded its 5G network to Kozhikode and Malappuram, marking another step in its ongoing nationwide rollout across 17 priority circles where it has acquired 5G spectrum.
Earlier this year, Vi introduced 5G in cities including Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Bangalore, Mysuru, Nagpur, Chandigarh, Patna, Jaipur, Sonipat, Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Surat, Vadodara, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Nashik, Meerut, Vishakhapatnam, Madurai and Agra as part of its phase-wise expansion.
Customers in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram with 5G-enabled smartphones can now use Vi 5G services. As part of its introductory offer, Vi is providing unlimited 5G data on plans starting at ₹299. With this, users can enjoy high-definition video streaming, faster gaming, smooth video calls, quick downloads, and real-time cloud access.
Speaking on the launch, George Mathew V, Business Head for Kerala at Vodafone Idea, said, “As we launch Vi 5G in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram, we are excited to bring the future of connectivity to the four key cities of Kerala. With our next-gen 5G alongside our robust 4G services, we aim to provide more options and an enhanced experience to our users. We are committed to systematically expanding our 5G footprint across Kerala, in line with growing demand and 5G handset adoption.”
To enable this rollout, Vi has joined hands with Ericsson in Kerala to deploy advanced and energy-efficient infrastructure. The company is also using AI-powered Self Organising Networks to improve network performance and reliability.
Alongside its 5G rollout, Vi has been working to strengthen its 4G services across Kerala. It launched 4G in Lakshadweep in November last year and has since made several upgrades. Since March 2024, Vi has deployed 900 MHz spectrum across more than 1400 sites to enhance indoor coverage, introduced 2100 MHz spectrum at over 4300 sites, and expanded network capacity by adding more spectrum bandwidth. These upgrades, carried out over 15 months from April 2024 to June 2025, have led to a 22 percent increase in network capacity in the state.
With its latest 5G launch and ongoing 4G improvements, Vi aims to provide reliable and high-quality connectivity across both urban and rural areas of Kerala, meeting the increasing demand for faster and more consistent mobile internet.
