Several malicious mobile applications disguised as device tracking tools, VPNs, spam blockers, and dating services have been discovered on official Google and Apple app stores, allegedly linked to the cybercrime and ad tech network known as VexTrio Viper.
According to an analysis by a cyber intelligence firm, installing these apps, such as the Android application ‘Spam Shield block’, can lead to aggressive advertising, subscription scams, and the theft of email addresses and other personal information.
Investigations further revealed that VexTrio operates through multiple associated organisations, including Taco Loco, Teknology, Adtrafico, and Los Pollos. These entities manage the publishing and advertising networks that provide platforms for malware distributors and other threat actors.
“Russian organised crime groups began building an empire within ad tech starting in or around 2015. VexTrio is a key group within this industry, but there are other groups. All types of cybercrime, from dating scams to investment fraud and information stealers use malicious adtech, and it goes largely unnoticed,” said Dr. Renee Burton, Vice President of Threat Intelligence at the firm.
Cybersecurity experts warn that these threats often go undetected by app store security filters, making it essential for users to remain cautious when downloading apps, even from official platforms.
