Varanasi cyber crime unit busts gang behind fake franchise fraud

The cyber crime cell in Varanasi has arrested two members of a gang accused of cheating people by offering fake franchises of well known companies. The fraud led to losses of several lakh rupees for multiple victims.

DCP Crime T Sarvanan and ACP Cyber Crime Vidush Saxena shared the details during a press briefing on Monday evening. They said that electronic surveillance and digital tracking helped officers trace and arrest the gang leader Shantanu Kumar from Jamshedpur in Jharkhand and his associate Vikas Kumar from Nevada in Bihar. Both suspects had earlier been jailed for a similar cyber fraud.

Police recovered fourteen mobile phones, two laptops, three SIM cards, fake documents, two WiFi routers and cash worth fifty four thousand five hundred rupees from their possession.

Investigators said the accused created fake websites and fake advertisements in the name of reputed companies. They promoted these advertisements on online platforms to target people searching for dealership and franchise opportunities. After victims shared their contact details, the fraudsters posed as company representatives. They sent fake intent letters, registration papers and invoices to build trust.

The accused demanded money for registration fees, security deposits and other charges. Many people paid these amounts believing they were dealing with genuine companies.

The case came to light after Ayush Kumar from Rohaniya filed a complaint stating that he lost twenty lakh rupees while trying to secure a franchise. He lodged the complaint on August thirteen. The cyber crime cell analysed his digital evidence and successfully identified and arrested the accused.

The cyber police have said further investigation is under way to trace more members connected to the fraud network.
