Uttarakhand Police Leads Sweeping Crackdown Across 17 States on Online Fraudster

In a bold and unprecedented move, the special task force of Uttarakhand Police launched an extensive crackdown under Operation Prahar, targeting cybercrime networks spread across the country. Over 23 dedicated teams carried out simultaneous raids at multiple locations in 17 states, identifying and confronting over 50 individuals deeply involved in online fraud.

Senior superintendent of police Navneet Singh shared, “Uttarakhand Police is the first police force in the country to have carried out a coordinated action on such a large scale against cyber criminals. This has sent a strong message to cyber offenders across the nation that they are no longer beyond the reach of the law. The nationwide campaign being conducted by the state police is a decisive step against cybercrime.”

This massive operation came as the state saw an alarming 146 percent surge in cybercrime-related losses—from ₹69 crore in 2023 to ₹170 crore in 2024. Determined to act swiftly, teams from Dehradun and Rudrapur’s cybercrime units worked hand in hand with local police forces and technical experts to trace digital trails. This included tracking down phone numbers, bank accounts, fake identities, and social media profiles.

The teams identified 52 fugitives long on the run, who were then served with legal notices. For seven cybercriminals already in jail in other states, B-warrants were secured, and fresh remands were obtained for continued investigation. Six more individuals had bailable warrants successfully executed.

Adding to the gravity of the findings, the operation uncovered 225 people who had created fake identities to open bank accounts and acquire mobile numbers using forged documents. The compiled data was shared with police departments across the country for follow-up action.

In April, the special task force had also prepared teams to move across 28 states and union territories, targeting 337 cyber offenders in over 200 ongoing cases.

Uttarakhand’s bold initiative stands as a powerful message in the war against digital crime—swift, strategic, and relentless.
