US Tech Job Postings Drop by Over 50% Since ChatGPT Launch, AI Roles See Growth

The rise of generative artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT has reshaped the US tech job market, leading to a sharp decline in several traditional roles. According to new labour market data, tech job postings in the United States have fallen by more than half since the release of ChatGPT in November 2022.

Industry experts say the shift reflects how businesses are adopting AI to automate coding, testing and routine IT functions, reducing the need for certain positions. Cost-cutting measures combined with deeper AI integration into workflows have further accelerated this trend.

Roles in Decline
Some of the hardest-hit positions include front-end and back-end software developers, quality assurance testers, database administrators and technical support specialists. While these roles are not vanishing altogether, analysts note that AI systems are increasingly handling repetitive and standardised tasks, resulting in fewer openings for human workers.

Roles on the Rise
At the same time, demand is rising for roles directly tied to AI development and governance. These include machine learning engineers, AI product managers, prompt engineers, data scientists focused on AI model training and AI ethics and compliance officers. Many of these jobs require hybrid skills, blending technical knowledge with expertise in sectors like finance, law and healthcare, as companies rush to deploy AI in products and services.

Economists believe this marks a structural shift in the tech labour market. While AI is reducing demand for traditional jobs, it is creating fresh opportunities in emerging fields. However, overall postings have contracted, suggesting that reskilling will be critical for workers to remain competitive in the evolving landscape.
