US space industry growth strains supply chains, report finds

A new report highlights growing challenges within the US space industry as demand rises faster than supply capabilities. According to a study by the Aerospace Industries Association and PricewaterhouseCoopers, the expanding space economy is placing significant strain on supply chains supporting satellite production, launch systems and related technologies.

The report, titled “Strengthening America’s Space Supply Chain,” states that the sector is entering a phase of rapid expansion driven by commercial ventures, government missions, and national security needs. However, existing supply networks were built for low-volume and slow production cycles, making it difficult to meet today’s demand for faster output. Suppliers have been cautious about increasing capacity due to uncertain government demand and fluctuating budgets, leading to growing bottlenecks.

Critical shortages are emerging in key areas such as space-grade microelectronics, radiation-hardened chips, sensors, and propulsion systems, many of which are produced by a limited number of manufacturers. Manufacturing services like chemical processing, coatings, and precision machining are also under pressure. Testing infrastructure is another major constraint, with limited facilities causing delays in satellite and component testing, which in turn impacts mission timelines. Workforce shortages further add to the challenge, as the industry faces an aging workforce and a lack of skilled engineers and technicians.

“Demand growth across the U.S. space sector is outpacing supplier capacity,” said Doug Anderson. “Now is the time to reassess supply strategies, invest in scalable capacity, and build the operational resilience needed to compete in a rapidly expanding market.” The report recommends clearer long-term demand forecasts, expansion of the supplier base, increased investment in testing infrastructure, and stronger workforce training. “The rapid expansion of the U.S. space industry has driven demand to historic highs, placing significant pressure on the supply chain that underpins U.S. leadership in space,” said Eric Fanning.
