US launches tech hiring drive with 1,000 software roles offering salaries up to ₹1.6 crore

A new federal hiring push is placing the US government directly in the race for top tech talent, with a programme aimed at recruiting around 1,000 software and technology professionals in its first phase.

The Trump administration has announced the United States Tech Force, a 2 year early career initiative that will bring engineers and technologists into federal agencies as full time government employees. The move offers a rare opportunity to work on large scale public sector technology projects, with annual salaries starting at about ₹1 crore and going up to nearly ₹1.6 crore.

The programme is being led by the Office of Personnel Management along with other government departments. Selected candidates will work across agencies to modernise digital systems, with roles focused on artificial intelligence, software development, cybersecurity, data analytics and technical project management.

What sets the initiative apart is strong backing from the private sector. At least 28 technology companies are involved, including Apple, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Meta, Nvidia, OpenAI, Oracle, Uber and xAI. While these firms will not hire participants at the start, they will provide training support, mentorship and speaker sessions led by senior leaders.

OPM Director Scott Kupor said the aim is to build a long term talent pipeline rather than push companies into early hiring decisions. “It wouldn’t be appropriate for us to ask companies to hire people without knowing who those people are,” he said, adding that he would be disappointed if the programme did not later lead to private sector job offers.

The roles are expected to offer salaries between $130,000 and $195,000 per year. There are no strict degree or prior experience requirements. Applications will be posted on the USA Jobs portal, followed by technical assessments, interviews with agency leaders and background checks. OPM will conduct initial screening before agencies make final selections.

Most jobs will be based in Washington DC, though some roles may allow remote or hybrid work. The positions are non partisan and are not linked to the US DOGE Service.

The programme also allows experienced engineering managers to join for 2 years through company nominations, after which they may return to their firms, subject to company policies.

Hiring for the first batch is expected to conclude by the end of March, with plans to make Tech Force an annual initiative.
