President Donald Trump has approved a new executive order launching the Genesis Mission, a nationwide initiative aimed at strengthening American artificial intelligence research and accelerating scientific innovation. The order presents a broad plan to expand computing capacity, increase access to major federal datasets and direct AI toward practical scientific applications. It also calls the Genesis Mission “comparable in urgency and ambition to the Manhattan Project.” Michael Kratsios, the president’s top science and technology advisor, will lead the effort.
According to the order, the Genesis Mission is intended to speed up scientific discoveries, reinforce national security, support energy leadership, boost workforce productivity and increase returns on federal research investments. Secretary of Energy, Chris Wright has been tasked with creating an American Science and Security Platform that will bring together the infrastructure required for the mission. This platform will provide researchers with powerful computing resources and key datasets needed to train advanced AI systems. Within 90 days, the Department of Energy must identify available federal systems, datasets and potential industry resources that can support this initiative.
The order explains that the integrated AI platform will use federal scientific datasets to train scientific foundation models and develop AI agents capable of testing new ideas, automating research workflows and accelerating breakthroughs. Kratsios will also help agencies combine their data and infrastructure to support this national effort. The mission sets a timeline of 270 days to direct AI toward major scientific and technology priorities, including advanced manufacturing, robotics, biotechnology and nuclear fission and fusion.
Experts emphasized the significance of the announcement. Keegan McBride said, “AI has the potential to transform the entire scientific, research and discovery pipeline. This represents a strong signal from the U.S. to the world about what is possible.” The Genesis Mission expands on the National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource, created in 2020 to unite federal agencies and private partners in building national AI capabilities. Lynne Parker highlighted the importance of government investment, stating that “Government support for AI research builds the foundation for new breakthroughs and helps keep innovation aligned with the public interest.” Recent moves to strengthen AI supercomputing capacity, including new systems with AMD and future Nvidia powered upgrades at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, reinforce the federal commitment to advancing AI and scientific leadership.
