UPI Circle Debuts on BHIM App: A Smarter, Safer Way to Share Payment Power

In a move that reshapes how we share digital financial responsibilities, NPCI BHIM Services Limited (NBSL) has unveiled a thoughtful new feature on the BHIM app called UPI Circle. It’s more than a digital upgrade, it’s a philosophy of shared control, empowered delegation, and transparent trust.

With UPI Circle, a primary account holder can nominate up to five trusted people, whether they’re family, friends, colleagues, or dependents—to initiate payments using UPI. However, every transaction must be approved in real time by the primary user via their UPI PIN. In essence, it’s delegation without compromise on control.

As Lalitha Nataraj, MD & CEO of NBSL, beautifully stated, “UPI Circle on BHIM is more than just a feature; it’s a step towards a more inclusive and connected financial ecosystem.”

This timely launch rides the momentum of surging UPI adoption. In April alone, UPI recorded a jaw-dropping 18.3 billion transactions, valued at ₹24.77 trillion, a leap of 13.6% in volume and 12.8% in value from March, as per NPCI data.

What is UPI Circle, really?

Think of it as partial access with full oversight. Exclusive to the updated BHIM app v4.0.2, UPI Circle lets a main user invite up to five secondary users. These users can initiate but not complete payments until the primary user taps “approve” in real time.

You see everything. You control everything. And no money ever moves without your say.

Why It’s a Game Changer

UPI Circle has been thoughtfully built with inclusivity and everyday utility in mind:

– Helps seniors who struggle with mobile banking by letting caregivers assist securely.

– Empowers youth and kids with limited but supervised digital spending power.

– Supports small business owners, letting staff handle ops-related payments—without handing over full control.

– Guides digitally unsure users, enabling learning without financial risk.

How to Get Started with UPI Circle:

– Download or update your BHIM app (v4.0.2 or newer).

– Head to the ‘UPI Circle’ section from the main screen or menu.

– Tap ‘Add Secondary User’, then enter their UPI ID or scan their QR.

– Select the delegation rule as “Approve every payment.”

– The secondary user gets an invite, once they accept, they can start initiating payments.

– For each transaction, you’ll get a live notification to approve it using your UPI PIN.

UPI Circle is part of a broader refresh of BHIM’s interface, which now also boasts exciting features like Split Expenses, Family Mode, and a handy Spend Dashboard to track your money flow with elegance.

In a digital world moving at the speed of thought, UPI Circle is a gentle pause, a bridge between independence and supervision, between help and trust.
