Upcoming iPad mini model may include water resistant design and OLED display

Apple is preparing a significant upgrade for the iPad mini that could arrive in 2026. A report suggests that the next version of the compact tablet may feature water resistance similar to what is seen on iPhones. This would make the device safer to use in everyday places such as kitchens, bathrooms or near pools.

The report explains that Apple is working on a new speaker system that uses vibrations instead of visible speaker holes. Speaker openings are often weak points where water can enter. By removing these openings the tablet may gain better protection against splashes and light water exposure.

Unlike iPhones that use seals and gaskets to achieve water resistant ratings the iPad mini is said to use a different method. The goal is to increase durability while keeping the design and audio performance at a high level. At present no iPad model carries an official rating for dust or water protection. If Apple introduces this feature it would be the first iPad to offer any kind of water resistance and could influence future iPad designs as well.

Another expected upgrade is the shift from an LCD display to an OLED display. OLED screens are known for richer colors deeper blacks and improved energy efficiency. These are features currently seen on iPhones and Apple Watch. Bringing OLED to the iPad mini would improve viewing quality for streaming reading and gaming.

However these enhancements may lead to a price increase. The report indicates the price could rise by around $100 which would push the starting cost higher than the current $499 model.

The most recent major update to the iPad mini was released in 2024 with the seventh generation version. If Apple introduces both water resistance and an OLED screen in 2026 it would mark one of the biggest advancements in the product’s history. It may also bring the iPad mini closer to the durability and display standards found in Apple’s premium devices.
