Unitree Leads At First World Humanoid Robot Games In China

The first ever World Humanoid Robot Games has come to a close in Beijing. The three day event brought together 280 teams from 16 countries including the United States. Teams used humanoid robots made by Chinese companies such as Unitree and Booster.

The games featured unusual competitions where robots showed off their abilities in dance battles, martial arts, track and field races including the 400 metre and 1500 metre runs, the long jump and even a football tournament.

“Robots have stronger joints and core strength,” said Guo Tong, a programmer who worked on one of the football playing robots for his team Hephaestus. Guo also said he imagines robots replacing his idol Cristiano Ronaldo by 2050.

Chinese Olympic boxer Li Yang, who was watching a robot boxing match, said “Robots are easier to coach. Humans are emotional.”

Hangzhou based Unitree, often seen as a rival to Tesla’s Optimus, won several medals during the competition. Other strong performers included Beijing based X-Humanoid and Shenzhen listed UBTECH.

The Chinese government has named humanoid robots a key industry for the future economy and has set plans to create a world class humanoid robot sector by 2027. As part of these efforts, another Olympic style humanoid robot event is already scheduled for next August.

Robots also competed in practical skill tests by working as store clerks, factory employees and hotel staff. In one housekeeping challenge, robots had to collect garbage from a hotel room and take out the trash. Referees explained that opening and closing doors was the biggest obstacle in this task.

Designer Wang Xidong said the competition is important for improving humanoid technology. “We are refining our robots,” he said. “Everyone feels motivated to compete.”
