UIDAI to Launch e-Aadhaar App with QR Code for Easy and Paperless Verification

UIDAI is all set to launch a new e-Aadhaar system powered by QR codes, which will eliminate the need for carrying or submitting physical photocopies of Aadhaar cards for identity verification. This digital solution is expected to roll out across India by the end of 2025.

The updated Aadhaar app will allow users to change most of their personal details from home, making the process faster and more user-friendly. UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar stated that nearly 2,000 out of the existing 1 lakh machines have already been upgraded to support the new system.

Starting November, Aadhaar holders will only need to visit enrolment centres for biometric verification like fingerprints and iris scans. This step is aimed at reducing paperwork, speeding up updates, and preventing identity fraud.

Under the new system, UIDAI will directly fetch user details from verified government databases such as birth certificates, driving licenses, passports, PAN cards, ration cards and MNREGA records. There are also discussions to include electricity bill data to make address verification easier.

UIDAI is also focusing on biometric updates for children and is working with educational boards like CBSE to organise biometric enrolment drives. These will help children complete mandatory Aadhaar updates at ages five to seven and again between fifteen and seventeen years.

The move also targets the reduction of fake documents used in Aadhaar registrations and real estate transactions. Sub-registrar offices and the hospitality industry are currently testing the QR code-based system for secure identity verification. The feature is being built with strict privacy measures so that personal data is shared only with the user’s clear consent.

This initiative is part of UIDAI’s broader goal to simplify Aadhaar-related services and ensure safer, quicker and more reliable identity management for all citizens.
