Identity verification in daily life is set for a major shift as UIDAI moves ahead with a new rule that will stop organisations from collecting and storing photocopies of Aadhaar cards. A PTI report says the rule has been approved and will be notified soon, marking the end of a long standing practice followed across hotels, telecom outlets and event checkpoints.
The change is driven by growing security concerns. Millions of paper copies stored in offices, hotels and other places pose a risk because Aadhaar numbers are sensitive. By removing physical photocopies from the process, UIDAI aims to reduce chances of misuse and protect personal information. The new approach will rely on digital verification tools that offer better security and faster processing.
At the centre of this shift is the QR code printed on every Aadhaar card. The code carries encrypted basic details that can be scanned to confirm identity without exposing the full Aadhaar number. It is simple, quick and cannot be misused like a photocopy. UIDAI is also developing an app that will allow offline verification, so businesses will not need to connect to the central database. This means hotel check ins and similar procedures can be completed with a quick scan on a mobile device.
One major requirement will apply to all service providers. Any organisation that wants to verify Aadhaar will now need to register with UIDAI. This will include hotels, telecom companies and event organisers. Once registered, they will gain access to the digital verification tools, ensuring a consistent and secure process across all sectors.
The UIDAI CEO has confirmed that the new rule is ready and will be announced soon. The shift signals the end of paper based checks and brings a safer, digital first system for both users and organisations. People can expect fewer photocopies, less risk and a more secure way to share identity details, while organisations benefit from a cleaner and more reliable process.
